Safety guide
You are meeting people from another country, often for the first time. Here is what MovieTalk does to protect you, and what you can do yourself.
Conversations need two yeses
Someone can send you interest, but nothing more happens until you accept. If you pass, they aren’t told and won’t see you again.
In Safety settings you choose who can send you interest: everyone, or verified people only.
Video calls open after chatting
A video call can only be requested once you’ve each sent 3 messages. Get to know someone in chat first.
A call only connects if you answer it. In Safety settings you can choose who can request a video call: All matches, Verified people only or No one.
You choose how a call starts
When a call comes in, you pick one of these before anything is shown:
- Voice only: you hear each other, cameras stay off.
- Start blurred: video is blurred until you tap Unblur.
- Start with video: both cameras on from the start.
Make voice the default
Turn on Always start calls with voice only in Safety settings, and every call starts that way. You can still switch to video during the call.
Selfie check
To get the Verified badge, take a selfie copying the pose shown on screen. We compare it with the person’s profile photos.
The selfie is only used to check it’s you and never appears on your profile. Prefer verified people if you are unsure about someone.
Requests like these may be a scam
Romance and investment scams often start friendly and move fast. Be careful when someone:
- asks you to send money, lend money or pay a fee for them
- suggests an investment, a trading app or cryptocurrency
- sends links to outside websites or asks you to move to another messaging app
- shares a bank account number or asks for yours
- has an urgent emergency soon after you met
- avoids video calls but talks about a future together
Never send money to someone you haven’t met.
Report and block
Report is in every chat, every profile and on the call screen. Choose what happened, and add details if you want.
Block ends the match and you won’t see each other again. They won’t be notified. You can block with or without reporting.
Every report is reviewed within 24 hours
A real person on our team reviews each report within 24 hours. While a report is being reviewed, the reported account may be shown to fewer people.
Depending on what happened, we warn the person, pause their account or remove it permanently.
We don’t record calls
Video and audio go directly between your phones and are never recorded on our servers. Subtitles are created as text so they can be translated.
Don’t record or screenshot the other person without their permission. Doing so breaks our terms.
If you meet in person
- Meet in a busy public place, and plan your own way there and back.
- Tell a friend where you’re going and who you’re meeting.
- Keep personal details such as your home address to yourself until you know someone well.
If you feel unsafe
If you are in danger, contact local emergency services first: police 112 in Korea, 191 in Thailand (Tourist Police 1155).
For anything else, report in the app or write to support@movietalk.app.
